Dr. Mamta Mehra teaches: Land Use Practices
The required Live Deep Dives introduce Fellows to specific groups of solutions. These 45- 60 minute reviews of the state of a “sector” (like Oceans or the Built Environment) are guided by sector experts and provide an overview of challenges in the sector, the contribution of that sector to global challenges (climate, inequality, biodiversity etc) and how its solutions work. Fellows will be provided resources to explore more according to their interests.
Session Overview
In this intricate session, Dr. Mamta Mehra will delve into the scientific and technical underpinnings of sustainable land use practices that harmonize ecological preservation with human development. The landscape of land management is complex, influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors. Here, participants will explore how cutting-edge scientific research, data analysis, and technological advancements are shaping regenerative land use, contributing to biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing community resilience.
Learning Goals
Understand Land Sink Dynamics: Understand the intricate processes of carbon sequestration and the mechanisms by which various land-based ecosystems, such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands, serve as vital carbon sinks
Understanding Ecosystem Degradation: Recognize the causes and consequences of degradation posed by land degradation, deforestation, and unsustainable land use practices.
Strategies for Restoration & Protection: Delve into scientific and community-driven strategies for ecosystem restoration and protection, focusing on rewilding, afforestation, reforestation and sustainable management practices, as powerful tools for enhancing carbon sequestration, mitigating climate impacts, and biodiversity preservation.
Biodiversity Conservation: Comprehend the critical role of diverse species in ecosystem functionality and resilience, exploring real-world examples of successful conservation projects.
Community Engagement and Livelihoods: Learn about the socio-economic dimensions of ecosystem restoration, emphasizing community involvement, traditional knowledge, and alternative livelihood options.
